St. Josef’s Vineyards & Winery

St. Josef’s Vineyards & Winery ~ one of Oregon wine pioneers. Celebrating 40 years of vineyards! Before there were microbrews and gourmet coffee in Oregon, there was St Josef’s Winery. Serious Wines for the Not So Serious…

Like many pioneering wineries we have a story. A story of vision, love of the land, hard work, and personal pride. Josef Fleischmann owner winemaker was born in Hungary with wine in his veins; his grandfather had a winery in the picturesque valleys of Central Hungary. (Prior to the wars Hungary was considered among the premier winemaking areas of the world- but that’s another story). Josef & family, like many entrepreneurs, fled Hungary after WWII when the Communists took over and he grew up along the shores of Lake Constance in Southern Germany. After studying and apprenticing in baking he immigrated to the US. He soon found his way to Chicago as a professional baker and enjoyed life in the large German community playing soccer and more. He met a girl, Lilli who also had come over from Germany after fleeing the eastern bloc.

Opportunity for new adventures brought them out for a visit to Oregon one April in the early 1960s. After seeing the verdant green and uncrowded roads (after months of winter in Chicago) they proclaimed it Shangri-La and made plans to go west. Josef put a bid in on a farm between Canby & Aurora in May, and was surprised when it was accepted late in October. They made the move with a 3 year old and new-born on a mattress in the back of a van to a small farm house on a dirt road in the heart of the Willamette Valley. Known in history books as the end of the Oregon Trail, the Willamette Valley boasts rich farmlands and favorable weather with warm days and cool nights. Because of the soil content, combined with hot days, cool nights and abundant water Josef realized it was an ideal place for an aspiring vintner.

München Haus

When we first started München Haus, we had visions of an outdoor eatery and beer garden where family and friends (even four legged friends!) could meet to experience a taste of Germany in the beautiful Alpine town of Leavenworth. It is with the help of our families and wonderful, dedicated employees that we are able to offer a unique Leavenworth dining experience.

We have always loved vacationing in Leavenworth and when we were raising our kids and farming (hops, apples, wine grapes) in Prosser, Washington, we would frequently escape to Leavenworth. In 2000 we decided to diversify and invest in an open lot in Leavenworth. When we built München Haus on our lot we started small with just a modest dwelling and a covered area where we popped fresh Kettle Korn on the weekends. Soon we decided to move and make Leavenworth our home and we decided to expand the offerings at München Haus to include Bavarian Sausages cooked over an open grill, and draft beers highlighting German and Northwest brews, along with local wines. Numerous sausage, beer, wine, German potato salad, pretzel, mustard and fresh squeezed lemonade taste test later we now have the München Haus of today.

A fun, relaxing, Bavarian-influenced outdoor sausage grill and beer garden where you can enjoy a delicious bratwurst with your family while enjoying refreshments on our balcony with the views of the Cascade Mountains in the distance. We now proudly serve refreshing, delicious, award winning local craft beers from our brewery, Icicle Brewing Company, www.iciclebrewing.com. We (Oliver, Pamela Brulotte and our children Gabrielle, Joshua & Elise) welcome you and hope you enjoy your experience at München Haus and all of your Leavenworth adventures.

Etowah Meadery

Etowah Meadery is a unique Farm Winery. We make wine from honey, it's called Mead. Mead is the oldest alcoholic beverage in the world. It is traced back to 7000 BC in Northern China where it was found in pottery vessels as well as on the Island Crete about 8000 BC. Some say the origins can be traced back to Africa over 70,000 years ago.

Aristotle discussed mead in his writings. It was the known drink of the Greeks, including Plato and Socrates. Mead was also the drink of Kings and warriors as portrayed in the Old English epic Beowulf.

Unlike wine made from grapes or other fruits, Mead has a unique mouth-feel since it is made with honey. Mead is fermented similar to wine or cider and can be dry or sweet depending on style and recipe. Like variations of grape wine, so to with Mead with over two dozen variants and with over 300 unique type of honey.

Dahlonega native Blair Housley, owner of Etowah Meadery makes several styles and types mead and is currently using over five types of honey. Etowah Meadery sources its local Georgia honey from several beekeepers. Some of the fruits used in recipes come from his property in Lumpkin and Forsyth.

Currently Etowah Meadery offers five wine style meads and nine draft style meads that are carbonated, they are light fresh and crisp. We have more in the works, including two barrel aged products, a Banana Split mead and a Chocolate Raspberry mead, both are aged in Chocolate Rye Whisky barrels from Lazy Guy distillery in Kennesaw, GA. Etowah Meadery is also repurposing some of the Whisky barrels to age honey in and will have that to offer soon.
